SCURRY

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN OLD FRIEND GOES AWAY AND A NEW ONE COMES IN?

For a long time, three nutty characters have gathered for a weekly dance party. But when one of them doesn’t show up, the other two must forge a new routine. They post an invitation for a newcomer to join their social club, but they are unprepared for the creature who arrives. Their weekly dance party will never be the same. Scurry is a cozy, off-beat comedy that celebrates friendship, difference, and dancing!

We created Scurry because we wanted to explore how we make new friends with those that are different than us. At the beginning of Scurry, our group of 3 friends has some pretty silly things they always do but as the play goes on, they have to figure out how to do these things if one friend isn’t there. Can they do the same things with a new and different friend? Do the things they do have to change? Is change a good thing or a scary thing? These were some of the questions we asked ourselves when making Scurry and what is most exciting about these questions is that everyone’s answers and feelings might be different - and that’s okay too.

Scurry was developed in partnership with kindergarten students from PS 261 in Brooklyn. Through a series of creative play and story development workshops led by a team of teaching artists, the students offered their ideas about squirrels and friendship and acted as dramaturgs, informing the devising process of the artists as they created the show.
